Introduction to Ski Touring

Do you enjoy off-piste but find resorts too crowded ?

Then why not go ski touring, where you can leave the crowds behind and make your own tracks in the backcountry. A two day course to get you started.

We will try and undertake a ski tour each day, allowing plenty of time for learning new skills along the way. Tours will not be too demanding physically or technically).

THIS IS NOT AN INTRO SPLIT BOARDING COURSE.

We will ski tour at a maximum ratio of 1:6.

Specific skills we will cover are:

  • Use of skins and skinning technique.

  • Track setting.

  • Group management.

  • Use of couteaux (ski crampons).

  • Uphill and downhill kick turns.

  • Identification of avalanche hazards.

  • THIS IS NOT AN INTRO SPLIT BOARDING COURSE.

Touring is physically hard work. You should be capable of walking uphill for 2-3 hours each day. We try and use shorter tours to teach you skills, but conditions may dictate that we have to use longer tours.

  • You need to be a reasonable off-piste skier. You should be able to comfortably ski 35 degrees in variable snow. Any steeper ground, you might be a little slower, but you can always side-slip down in control. You should be fit enough to walk uphill, carrying a rucksack, for 3 hours maximum.

  • Lift Tickets

    Insurance

    Food/Accommodation

Mileage to venues outside the Chamonix Valley.

  • You will need to bring ski touring skis with skins and couteaux. Couteaux are mandatory, not optional. You will also need avalanche safety gear (transceiver, shovel and probe), but we can provide these if requested (Please e mail us in advance). If you need to rent touring gear we recommend Concept Pro next to the Aiguille du Midi lift (they will also give you a discount if you tell them that you are with us). You will also need spare gloves, warm clothing for rest stops, High SPF sun cream and lip balm, a peaked hat, and a packed lunch and drink.

  • Meeting Point: We will normally meet at 8am on the first day of the course at La Paniere bakery in central Chamonix (just opposite Sanglard Sports). That gives time for the team to discuss the plan, have a coffee together, and ask any questions. Please make sure you bring all your gear with you.

  • Expert instruction throughout the course.

Avalanche Safety gear can be borrowed at no extra cost.
